Essential Male Grooming…for the income impaired

Keeping yourself clean cut and well groomed should be an everyday occurrence. But for some, like those who can’t afford it, it’s simply not possible. I’m a prime example of a well groomed male; although nowadays I can’t afford all that I used to, I still manage to stay in tip top grooming standards.

First I’ll start with a quote that I learned from my favorite football player of all time, Deion Sanders – he said, “If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good. If you play good, you get paid good.” Sounds simple enough. But this simple, easy-to-remember quote can be used in any context. Whatever it is that you do, you want to look and feel good. If you feel like shit or feel that you look like shit, chances are, you’re projecting that for the world to pick up on. Personal grooming and cleaning is key in this situation, here’s a quick how-to on a budget…

1. Maintain your hair. If you can’t afford a hair cut and you don’t like how long it’s getting, save up a few bucks and buy some electric clippers from BillMart, the 15-30 bucks to get it may hurt at first, but it’s so worth in the long run. You can cut your own hair! Why waste 20 bucks or more every couple weeks or month. Yes it can be difficult to cut the back, but when you do it a few times you’ll get it. I do this very thing and maintain a nice fohawk hair cut that I get compliments on a lot. I haven’t paid for a hair cut in over 3 years, that’s a lot of money to be saved, especially because I used to pay for a cut every couple weeks. *Here’s a free tip* If you need to do a little extra, like me, you’ll want to use some kind of scissors, shearing, cutting, layering, etc. It helps for styling!

2. Facial hair. Ok, this one’s tricky, if you’re finna rock facial hair, just keep it trimmed and LINED UP! Don’t do the scraggly thing, it’s not crackin’. Now I do the 3, maybe even 5 day no-shave sometimes, but any more than that is too much and if you want to keep growing, just line it up under your jawline and below your cheekbones. A pack of cheap razors (from dollar bill or billmart) is a good go on a budget, you can get like 10 razors for just a couple bucks. Shaving cream is expensive, so check dollar bill and if not you can use Dove soap, it’s cheap, it’s thick (work to lather) and it protects from nicks and cuts. With no money, like me, your whole shaving kit shouldn’t exceed 10 dolla to make ya holla. Keep it clean!

3. Body hair. Come on guys, we’re not in the 70′s anymore, long, bushy chest hair is not clean. If you got it, at least trim it. Shaving it can get tedious because it will be just like a beard but a larger area to shave, and we don’t have the money for all those razors! If you don’t have a cheap trimmer of some kind: beard/mustache, body hair trimmer, etc., you can even use your clippers that you cut your head hair with. The same goes with maintaining forearm hair, armpit hair, legs and let us not forget about the pubic hair. If it’s light and not bad, don’t worry, but if it’s bushy in any of those areas, shave or trim trim trim!

I think that’s enough to get all you guys out there started. I will do another male grooming posting soon and get a little more in depth for those who go above and beyond, like me. Until next time, keep it clean!
